Spanish La Liga

The Spanish La Liga consists of 20 teams and operates on a double round-robin system (each team plays against every other team twice, once at home and once away). In each match, the winner receives 3 points, the loser receives 0 points, and a draw earns both teams 1 point each. At the end of the season, teams are ranked based on their accumulated points. If two or more teams have the same number of points, their rankings are determined in the following order: 1. During the league’s regular season: a) League goal difference b) Total goals scored c) Head-to-head record (applicable only when teams with the same number of points have faced each other twice) d) Head-to-head goal difference (applicable only when teams with the same number of points have faced each other twice) 2. If teams with the same number of points have already faced each other twice: - When only two teams are tied, compare their head-to-head goal difference (without the away-goals rule). - When three or more teams are tied, compare: a) Points earned in head-to-head matches between teams with the same number of points b) Goal difference in head-to-head matches between teams with the same number of points c) Goals scored in head-to-head matches between teams with the same number of points 3. If teams with the same number of points have not faced each other twice, or if the above rules still fail to determine team rankings, then compare: a) Team league goal difference b) Team league goals scored 4. If team rankings still cannot be determined according to the above rules, the final ranking is determined by fair play points—teams with fewer points rank higher. 5. After the league season concludes: a) Head-to-head points b) Head-to-head goal difference c) League goal difference d) Total goals scored e) Fair play points The top five teams in the league automatically qualify for the group stage of next season’s UEFA Champions League; sixth-place finishers earn direct entry into next season’s UEFA Europa League; seventh-place finishers compete in next season’s UEFA Europa Conference League. The champions of the Copa del Rey may also participate in the Europa League—if the Copa del Rey champion has already secured a spot in the Champions League or Europa League, that Europa League berth will be passed on to the highest-ranked team in the league that did not qualify for either competition. The Europa Conference League berth will also be transferred accordingly. Additionally, this season’s La Liga regulations stipulate a system of 3 promotions and 3 relegations: the bottom three teams in the league table will be relegated to Segunda División for the upcoming season.
